No media coverage, but a lot of police “coverage” happened today at the World Naked Bikeride in my town. Five different squad cars made drive by’s and then parked 50 feet away with engines idling as the near naked protestors prepared for their 4 mile ride through the city. Near naked by order of the local law enforcers, was how the protestors had to go. Genitals and female nipples had to be covered. Unfortunately no females present took part in the protest, so there was no need for the mandatory “pasties.”A few were intimidated by the police presence, but I doubt seriously this had an effect on turnout. Next year, according to the organizer, John Palm, “should have a larger number of participants.” Whether the protest messages (anti war, anti oil dependence, pro body freedom) got obscured by the small number of participants or the nudity is unknown. “But,” as one protestor named Dave put it, “as long as we are here and if only one person takes note, that’s all that matters. We’ve achieved our purpose!”
